Cyprus (Cupressus sempervirens) is a winter-hardy tree typical of the Mediterranean, it is widespread from southern Portugal and Morocco to Iran. It can grow up to 35 metres and its leaves are elongated and thin. It is popular as an ornamental tree that can also serve as a hedge.

Essential oils are volatile fragrant essences that plants store in their petals, fruits, bark and roots - cypress essential oil is thus obtained by distilling the leaves.
